STENE FAMILY TREE
The Stene Family Tree in Ancestry.com is built around Louise Rosa Eschmann (1895-1985), grandmother of Susan Elizabeth Stene. Richard V Chidlow and Susan E Stene were married in 1975 in Houston, TX.
Louise Rosa Eschmann (1895-1985) immigrated from Switzerland in 1899. She was always known as Rosa or Rose.
Her father, Arnold Eschmann (1875-1950) had immigrated in 1898 and her mother Marie Louise Staub (1876-1948) shortly afterwards. There was another daughter Louisa (1896-1915). No arrival manifests have been located so these dates are derived from Census
records but are likely close. The family settled in New Jersey where another child Arnold Theodore was born in 1900. There is also
a record for the the birth of a son Eugen Eschmann in 1899 but no other records have been found; he was not listed on the 1900 Census so
it is probable that he did not survive. Sometime in late 1915 or soon afterwards, the family moved to Los Angeles. However, Rosa stayed
behind in New York and in 1916 she married Carl Specker (1887-1958) also a Swiss immigrant. They had two children, Charles Albert and Louise Rose. Rosa and Carl divorced in 1925
and she married John Schwartzstrub (1899-1962), the son of a French/German immigrant, with whom she had a daughter, Elizabeth Jean.
We have Rosa’s US Naturalization Certificate - she dropped the Louise and changed Rosa to Rose - and her birth record from Zurich
but there are few other family records relating to the Eschmann’s. No letters or other correspondence has been preserved and only
a few photographs. There is a receipt for a gravesite at Mount Olivet Cemetery, NY for Louisa in 1915 which is the only evidence we
have of her death.
The family apparently was not close and there was no attempt to stay in touch.
However there were several related Eschmann’s who immigrated and settled in the North East USA. A single photograph with a message to “Cousin Rose” from “Bob and Viola” led to the discovery of a large family network of Eschmann's.
John Schwartzstrub was one of five children born to Jean Baptiste Schwartzstrub and Elisabet Unger who immigrated from Alsace/France. Several of their siblings also immigrated to the New York area in the late 1800s.
Rose's children and 3 grandchildren are listed below.
There are 2 great grandchildren.
